OpenOffice Writer (Writer) is a free alternative to Microsoft Word, and is part of the competing OpenOffice suite. OpenOffice is not a web-based service but rather runs as a desktop application. The free word processor is compatible across various international platforms, and works on Mac of PC. Writer has no cost or registration, and comes with rich online support.
